Paul D. Goldner: The Visionary Who Built North America’s Metric Metals Market

In the steel industry, success often comes from identifying opportunities others overlook. Few leaders exemplify that principle better than Paul D. Goldner, the longtime owner and CEO of Parker Steel Company. Through innovation, persistence, and a willingness to challenge industry norms, Goldner transformed a traditional steel distributor into the largest supplier of metric-sized metals in North America.

A Lifetime in Steel Business

Paul Goldner’s connection to Parker Steel began long before he assumed leadership. He started working in the family business stuffing envelopes. After graduating from Ohio State University, he joined Parker Steel full-time in 1968, continuing the legacy started by his father, Leo Goldner, who founded the company in 1955.

Over the years, Paul gained experience in nearly every aspect of the business, including packing orders, sales, purchasing, credit, operations, and management. This hands-on knowledge would later prove invaluable as he navigated one of the most challenging periods in the steel industry’s history.

Seeing Opportunity During Crisis

The early 1990s were a difficult time for steel distributors throughout North America. Rather than competing against larger companies selling identical products, Goldner recognized that survival would require a bold and unique strategy. Following Parker Steel’s bankruptcy in 1990, he purchased the company’s assets and rebuilt the business around a revolutionary concept: stocking only metric-sized metals.

At the time, manufacturers often struggled to source metric-sized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and alloy products quickly. Although some distributors stocked limited metric inventory, none offered a comprehensive selection. Paul saw an underserved market and committed Parker Steel to becoming the industry’s metric specialist.

Building a Market-Leading Niche

What began with a small inventory stored beneath his office grew into a company known throughout North America. In the early years, Paul personally purchased inventory, received shipments, filled orders, and loaded trucks. Today, Parker Steel operates more than 120,000 square feet of warehouse space and stocks thousands of metric-sized products for manufacturers, engineers, OEMs, and machine shops.

Under Paul’s  leadership, Parker Steel became the only steel distributor in the United States that focuses exclusively on metric-dimensional metals. The company’s extensive inventory helps customers eliminate unnecessary machining, reduce waste, and streamline production processes.

His vision was simple but powerful: make buying metric metals as easy and convenient as possible. That philosophy established Parker Steel as a trusted partner for companies in markets where metric specifications are needed.

Leadership Through Innovation

One of Paul’s  greatest strengths has been his willingness to think differently. While competitors pursued broader product strategies, he doubled down on specialization. This decision enabled Parker Steel to build one of the world’s largest inventories of metric-sized metal products and become a recognized authority in the metric metals market.

Colleagues often describe Paul as a strategic marketer with an exceptional memory for industry details and customer needs. His commitment to understanding market trends and customer challenges helped Parker Steel maintain a competitive advantage for decades.

A Commitment to Community

Beyond business success, Paul is known for his philanthropic efforts and community involvement. During the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, he helped Ukrainian and Russian refugees who settled in the Toledo area by assisting with housing, employment, and their transition to American life. Many of those individuals found careers at Parker Steel and remain connected to the company today.

His commitment to people reflects a leadership philosophy that values relationships as much as results.

A Lasting Legacy

Today, Parker Steel’s success stands as a testament to Paul’s belief that the best opportunities are often found where others are not looking. His leadership continues to shape the metric metals industry and support the manufacturing companies that depend on precision, efficiency, and reliable supply.

After nearly seven decades of involvement in the steel industry and more than 35 years leading Parker Steel’s transformation into a metric metals powerhouse, Paul passed the torch to his son-in-law, Michael Tipping, in January 2026. The leadership transition reflects Paul’s long-standing commitment to preserving Parker Steel as a family-driven business while preparing it for future growth. Having worked closely with the company for many years, Michael brings a deep understanding of Parker Steel’s unique market position and a shared vision for serving manufacturers who rely on precision metric materials. The transition ensures that the entrepreneurial spirit and customer-first philosophy established by Paul Goldner will continue to guide the company for generations to come.
