History of Parker Steel
Parker Steel Company, located in Toledo, Ohio, is the only steel distributor in the United States to stock exclusively metric-dimensional metals. As a result, the company serves as the largest supplier of metric-sized metals and services in North America. Leo Goldner founded Parker Steel in 1955, and in 1991 his son, Paul Goldner, renamed the company as Parker Steel International during an extremely low point in the steel industry. With the industry struggling, Paul saw that selling the same products as everyone else would lead to failure.
Paul decided to pursue a metals approach no one had tried previously. He discovered that no warehouses in America stocked metric sizes of carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and copper in all the standard shapes. About 25 firms sold metric sizes of metals, but none offered the full product range. Paul set out to make buying metal in metric sizes as fast, convenient, and easy as possible.
Paul launched the business on his own, hired a secretary, and stocked steel in the basement below his office. At first, he bought the inventory, received it, and put it away himself. He also took orders, then packed and loaded the trucks.
Today, Parker Steel operates more than 120,000 square feet of warehouse space and stocks six times as many metric-size items as all competitors combined. The company employs a fully trained warehouse crew, an experienced sales staff, a purchasing department, and a clerical office. Parker Steel carries more than 6,500 SKU’s, including round, flat, and hex bars; chrome-plated shafting; equal and unequal angles; tees; I beam; channels; shim stock; plates; sheets; round and seamless round tubing; and square and rectangular tubing.
Parker Steel serves business-to-business customers across an extremely diverse base, from engineers and large corporations to small job shop owners and everyone in between. Because we maintain extensive stock and keep a low minimum order of $85, we ship 96+% of orders the same day.
And Paul is glad to report that he no longer has to pack and ship orders himself!
