The story begins in 1955, with Leo Goldner, a man who founded a modest steel company in the industrial heart of the Midwest. But the real turning point wouldn’t come until 1991, when his son, Paul Goldner, took the helm. It was the depths of a steel industry depression—mills were closing, competitors were falling, and the market was flooded with identical products. Selling “what everyone else was selling” was a recipe for ruin.

Paul suspected there was something missing in the American market—something so obvious it was hiding in plain sight. He began to dig. The more he looked, the stranger it became…
